Aricept Information

Aricept, with the generic name of Donepezil, is used to improve thinking and memory in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. How it precisely works is not made certain, but it is considered to prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine is a chemical found in the brain, which when below its sufficient level, triggers Alzheimer’s disease.

Aricept Indications

Aricept is used to treat Alzheimer’s disease by preven ting the breakdown of a chemical named acetylcholine that is found in the brain.

Aricept Warnings/Precautions

Have a talk with your doctor if you are suffering from any of these medical conditions below. You may be given a lower dosage or may need to undergo special monitoring while under treatment with Aricept:

  • Kidney disease including difficulty in urina ting
  • Liver disease
  • Heart disease such as slow, irregular heartbeat
  • History of stomach ulcers
  • Seizures
  • Lung problems including asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Need to have surgery

Inform your doctor if you are regularly taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as:

  • Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin)
  • Indomethacin (Indocin)
  • Nabumetone (Relafen)
  • Oxaprozin (Daypro)
  • Naproxen (Naprosyn, Anaprox, Aleve)
  • Ketorolac (Orudis, Orudis KT, Oruvail)

Aricept belongs to drugs labeled FDA Pregnancy Category C. This entails that its effects on an unborn child is uncertain. It is therefore not recommended for pregnant women to take this medication without consul ting first a physician.

Breastfeeding moms are also advised to see their doctor prior to taking this drug.

Aricept Intake Instructions

Aricept is ordinarily taken with a full glass of water once a day just before bedtime. It is not a stomach irritant so it can be taken on a full or empty stomach.

Better still, take Aricept as directed by your doctor.

Aricept Missed Dose

Aricept must not be double dosed. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Otherwise, skip the missed dose and proceed with the next one.

Aricept Overdose

Symptoms of over dosage are:

  • Serious nausea
  • Vomi ting
  • Watering mouth
  • Swea ting
  • Slow heartbeat and breathing
  • Sustained or severe dizziness
  • Fain ting
  • Blurred vision
  • Seizures
  • Collapse

Should you experience any of the above, seek medical help immediately.

Aricept Side Effects

It is recommended to stop intake of Aricept and to seek immediate medical assistance if you experience allergic reactions that include:

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Closing of the throat
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or hives

Other minor side effects that are likely to occur are the following:

  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Nausea, vomi ting or decreased appetite
  • Abdominal pain or diarrhea
  • Muscle cramps
  • Insomnia or vivid dreams
  • Dry mouth

If you have any of the listed conditions just continue use of Aricept and inform your doctor, including other side effects that are particularly bothersome and unexplainable.

Aricept Drug Interactions

Have a talk with your physician if you are taking any of these drugs:

  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral), Fluconazole (Diflucan), or Itraconazole (Sporanox)
  • Quinidine (Cardioquin, Quinidex, Quinaglute)
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
  • Dexamethasone (Decadron), Methylprednisolone (Medrol), Prednisone (Deltasone),

Prednisolone (Prelone, Prediapred), or other steroids

  • Rifampin (Rifadin, Rifamate, Rifater), Rifabutin (Mycobutin)
  • Phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton), Pentobarbital (Nembutal), Secobarbital (Seconal),

Mephobarbital (Mebaral)

You may be advised to undergo special monitoring while under treatment or may need dosage alteration.

Other prescribed or over-the-counter medicines may have unwanted reactions with Aricept. Inform your doctor for any medication you are currently taking.
